The 20th International Congress of Linguists is to be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre between from 2 – 6 July 2018. The hosts are CIPL (Comité International Permanent des Linguistes), the LSSA (Linguistics Society of Southern Africa) and UCT (the University of Cape Town).

The theme for 2018, The Dynamics of Language is meant to connect with the major ways of studying the phenomenon of language, while being responsive to the diversity of contexts of its use in the early 21st century.

The Congress is meant to showcase current developments in Linguistics and will run over five days with a plenary panel on linguistics in South Africa, nine plenary speakers covering a range of major sub-fields, 10 paper sessions each with its own focus speaker, up to 30 workshops, and several poster sessions.

While speakers and topics are drawn from a wide international pool, ICL 20 will take the additional opportunity of showcasing African language research. It will also cover applied linguistic areas of research of vital importance to the African continent and the 21st century at large, with a special extended session on Multilingualism, Education, Policy and Development.

The local organising committee is inviting all interested organisations to contact the secretariat to discuss sponsor and exhibition opportunities.

Sponsor a Student

Your support is needed for young African students and scholars.
ICL20 will cover topics relating to language, such as multilingualism, African languages, Sign languages etc. This is the first time the congress will be held in Africa…. the ideal opportunity for African scholars (Phd Students and post-docs) to attend the congress. However due to financial constraints, it is difficult for most African scholars to cover all the costs of attending an international congress. Travelling within Africa is expensive and we need financial assistance to get as many as possible African students to attend the congress.
There will be a strict vetting process and applications for grants will close at the end of January 2018. The LOC will then select worthy candidates based on the funding available.

The following options to sponsor an African student are available. You can select any of these or all 3:
• Register fee including the congress dinner (R5 000)
• Accommodation (6 nights at R1800 per night = R10 800)
• Flight (Estimate of R15 000)
